Multistate actions Minnesota's attorney general joined
- Attorneys general filing in the Character.AI bankruptcy October 14, 2026
- Letter from 42 attorneys general on sycophantic and delusional AI December 9, 2025
- Letter from 44 attorneys general to AI companies August 25, 2025
Joining a letter or court filing is not a lawsuit or a finding against any company.
Other Minnesota laws that may matter
- Consumer protection law: Minnesota Prevention of Consumer Fraud Act and Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act (Minn. Stat. sections 325F.69 and 325D.44). It applies to businesses generally, not to chatbots specifically; whether it reaches a particular chatbot practice is a legal question.
- Consumer privacy law: Minnesota Consumer Data Privacy Act (Minn. Stat. sections 325M.10 to 325M.21). It sets rules for personal data, which can include what people type into a chatbot, for businesses that meet its thresholds.
The 2027 legislative session
The Minnesota Legislature convenes on January 12, 2027. New chatbot bills will be added to our 2027 tracker as they are filed.
What still applies
Without a state chatbot law, companies serving Minnesota residents may still face other states' laws when they serve users there, general consumer protection law and federal rules. Congress is considering 13 chatbot bills; see federal bills.
