How to get rid of My AI on Snapchat, and delete what you shared

Snapchat's My AI chatbot sits in the Chat feed. Snap's help center explains how to unpin it, clear it from the feed and delete the data you shared with it, which are separate steps. Here is what Snap's own pages say, as of October 22, 2026, plus the parent controls and Utah's lawsuit.

The short answer

As of October 22, 2026, Snap's help center says you can unpin My AI or clear it from your Chat feed: press and hold My AI, tap Chat and Notification Settings, then tap Unpin Conversation or Clear from Chat Feed.

Clearing My AI from the feed does not delete what you shared with it. Snap's help center says data you previously shared with My AI remains, and that you delete it separately in Settings. Snap's help center says sending My AI a message brings it back to your Chat feed.

On who can do this, Snap's pages differ: its overview of My AI refers to unpinning or removing My AI with Snapchat+, its paid subscription, but its step-by-step article on unpinning or removing My AI does not mention a subscription. We did not find a Snap page describing a way to switch My AI off entirely for your own account. Snap says parents can turn off a teen's My AI access through Family Center.

How to unpin or remove My AI from your Chat feed

These are the steps in Snap's help center as of October 22, 2026.

  • Unpin My AI: swipe right from the Camera screen to open Chat, press and hold My AI, tap Chat and Notification Settings, then tap Unpin Conversation.
  • Remove (clear) My AI from your Chat feed: swipe right from the Camera screen, press and hold My AI, tap Chat and Notification Settings, tap Clear from Chat Feed, then confirm.
  • Mute My AI instead: from the Chat screen, press and hold My AI, tap Chat and Notification Settings, tap Notification Settings, then turn on Mute Chats, Mute Calls or both and choose how long.
  • To bring My AI back: search for My AI and send it a message, or press and hold it in Chat, tap Chat and Notification Settings and pin the conversation.

How to delete your My AI data

Snap's help center says content you share with My AI is stored until you delete it. Removing past My AI data from Snapchat's servers can take up to 30 days, according to Snap. Snap's articles label the menu items slightly differently (Clear Data or Delete Data, Clear My AI Data or Delete My AI Data).

  • Recent messages (last 24 hours): in your chat with My AI, press and hold a message and tap Delete.
  • iPhone: tap your Profile icon, then the gear icon for Settings, scroll to Privacy Controls, tap Clear Data, then tap Clear My AI Data and confirm.
  • Android: tap your Profile icon, then the gear icon for Settings, scroll to Account Actions, tap Clear My AI Data and confirm.
  • Group chats: Snap says clearing My AI data removes only your one-on-one chat with My AI. Messages in group chats that include My AI stay until you delete them using the group chat steps.
  • Team Snapchat: Snap says deleting My AI data does not delete stored Team Snapchat chat data. To delete that, go to Settings, Privacy Controls, Clear Data, Clear Conversations, then tap Team Snapchat and confirm.
  • Location: Snap says My AI can use your location if you have shared it with Snapchat, even with Ghost Mode on. To stop that, Snap says to deny Snapchat location access in your phone's settings and then clear your My AI data, since cached location may remain.

What Snap does with My AI data

These statements come from Snap's help center, its Privacy by Product page and its privacy policy effective September 21, 2026.

  • Retention: Snap's Privacy by Product page says it keeps the content you send to and receive from My AI until you delete it in the app or delete your account.
  • Ads and personalization: Snap says it uses content shared with My AI, and your location if you have enabled location sharing, to improve its products and to personalize your experience, including ads.
  • Model improvement: Snap's privacy policy says its machine learning models take My AI conversations into account to improve My AI's responses. Its Privacy by Product page says improving its generative AI features may involve automated review or human review and labeling.
  • Sharing: Snap's Privacy by Product page says it may share information with service providers and advertising partners to provide My AI.
  • Underlying models: Snap's help center says My AI runs on large language models from OpenAI and Google, with added safety controls from Snap.
  • Memory: Snap says it stores your conversations with My AI but that My AI does not remember the details of earlier conversations over time.
  • Group chats: Snap says My AI can read messages in a group chat it is part of.

Parental controls for My AI

On January 11, 2024, Snap said parents using Family Center would be able to restrict My AI from responding to their teen's chats, with the feature rolling out in the following months. Snap's Privacy by Product page says that for users under 18, a trusted adult in Family Center can see whether the teen has chatted with My AI and turn access on or off, but cannot see the content of those chats.

Snap's parents site says teens must be at least 13 to create an account, and that Family Center works only after the teen accepts the parent's invitation.

Utah's lawsuit over My AI

Utah's Division of Consumer Protection and the State of Utah sued Snap Inc. on June 30, 2025, in the Third Judicial District Court in Salt Lake County. The case is Utah Division of Consumer Protection and State of Utah v. Snap Inc. The suit covers other Snapchat features as well; these are the My AI allegations. They are allegations, not findings.

  • The complaint alleges Snap introduced My AI in May 2023, marketed it as a friend users can name and customize, and later rolled it out to Snapchat users generally, including teens.
  • It alleges Snap tested My AI for an unusually short period before launch and did not disclose that its safeguards were inadequate.
  • It alleges that in tests, My AI gave accounts posing as teens and children inappropriate advice, including about hiding alcohol and drugs from parents.
  • It alleges My AI collects location by default, that Ghost Mode does not stop location sharing with My AI, and that this is not disclosed in the app but only on an unlinked support page.
  • It alleges My AI conversations are sent to OpenAI and My AI data is shared with an advertising company without adequate disclosure.
  • It alleges My AI was automatically enabled for Snapchat users, placed at the top of users' chats and could not be removed from the app.
  • Claims: a federal court's summary of the case says Utah alleges violations of the Utah Consumer Sales Practices Act and the Utah Consumer Privacy Act, and seeks an injunction, restitution, damages and civil penalties, among other relief.
  • Status: Snap filed a separate federal suit to stop Utah's case. On March 24, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah dismissed Snap's federal claims without prejudice, declining to intervene in the ongoing state case (Snap Inc. v. Brown). As of October 22, 2026, we found no ruling ending the state case.

Other government action

On September 11, 2025, the FTC sent study orders under its 6(b) authority to seven companies, including Snap, asking how their AI chatbots that act as companions affect children and teens and how they use or share personal information from user conversations. It is a study, not an enforcement case.

Which laws may apply

Neither of the two state laws below names Snap, and whether My AI counts as a companion chatbot under either one is a legal question. These laws set duties for companion chatbot operators:

  • California SB 243, in effect since January 1, 2026: an operator may not let a companion chatbot engage users unless it keeps a protocol to prevent suicidal ideation, suicide or self-harm content, including referring users to crisis services, and must publish details of that protocol. For users it knows are minors, it must give a break reminder at least every three hours; SB 1119 removes those known-minor duties on January 1, 2027. A person injured by a violation can sue.
  • New York's AI companion law: operators must have a protocol that makes reasonable efforts to detect suicidal ideation or self-harm and refer users to crisis services such as 988, and must tell users at the start of an interaction, and at least every three hours during continuing interactions, that they are not talking with a human.

We are not saying Snap is covered by, or out of compliance with, any of these laws. It may have practices it has not published, and whether a law applies to it is a legal question this guide does not decide.
