Chatbot Laws Which laws apply?

New Jersey chatbot laws

New Jersey has no law that specifically regulates AI chatbots, as of November 4, 2026.

Joining a letter or court filing is not a lawsuit or a finding against any company.

Other New Jersey laws that may matter

  • Consumer protection law: New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act (N.J.S.A. 56:8-1 et seq.). It applies to businesses generally, not to chatbots specifically; whether it reaches a particular chatbot practice is a legal question.
  • Consumer privacy law: New Jersey's consumer data privacy law (P.L. 2023, c. 266) (N.J.S.A. 56:8-166.4 to 56:8-166.19), in effect from January 15, 2025. It sets rules for personal data, which can include what people type into a chatbot, for businesses that meet its thresholds.

What still applies

Without a state chatbot law, companies serving New Jersey residents may still face other states' laws when they serve users there, general consumer protection law and federal rules. Congress is considering 13 chatbot bills; see federal bills.
