Chatbot Laws Which laws apply?

North Dakota chatbot laws

North Dakota has no law that specifically regulates AI chatbots, as of November 4, 2026.

Multistate actions North Dakota's attorney general joined

Joining a letter or court filing is not a lawsuit or a finding against any company.

Other North Dakota laws that may matter

  • Consumer protection law: North Dakota's unlawful sales or advertising practices law (N.D. Cent. Code chapter 51-15). It applies to businesses generally, not to chatbots specifically; whether it reaches a particular chatbot practice is a legal question.

The 2027 legislative session

The North Dakota Legislature convenes on January 5, 2027. New chatbot bills will be added to our 2027 tracker as they are filed.

What still applies

Without a state chatbot law, companies serving North Dakota residents may still face other states' laws when they serve users there, general consumer protection law and federal rules. Congress is considering 13 chatbot bills; see federal bills.
