The short answer
Each company's help pages describe its own steps, and they differ. Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Grok each describe a way to delete a single chat. Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Grok describe a way to delete many or all chats at once, and Perplexity's help center describes deleting all sessions from its Library page. Perplexity calls its chats sessions.
The companies also state different retention windows after deletion, and different rules on whether chats are used for training. Those are listed in each section below, attributed to the company's page.
Google Gemini
Gemini chats are tied to your Google Account and to a setting Google calls Keep Activity. Google's help pages describe deleting chats and activity, and a separate page covers deleting the whole Google Account. We did not find a Gemini-only account deletion in the pages we read. For turning activity off, see our guide to how to turn off Gemini.
- Delete one chat (computer): in gemini.google.com, hover over the chat in the side panel, open More options and choose Delete. Google says this also deletes it from Gemini Apps Activity.
- Delete one chat (Android): open the Gemini app, tap the menu, press and hold the chat under Recent, then tap Delete.
- Delete all chats (computer): click Settings & help, then Activity, then Delete, then All time. On Android: Menu, your profile icon, Gemini Apps Activity, Delete, All time.
- Delete the account: Google's account page says to open the Data & privacy section of your Google Account, choose More options, then Delete your Google Account. It says emails, files, calendars and photos in the account will be gone, and that you might be able to recover it within a certain amount of time, without saying how long.
- Work or school accounts: Google's page says you can't delete chats there, and that an administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity.
Gemini: retention and training
Google's activity page says it aims to remove deleted data from view immediately, then delete it from its storage systems, and that deleting a chat does not delete the public link to a shared chat. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, English version last updated October 26, 2026, says chats are still saved for 72 hours when Keep Activity is off. It says chats reviewed by human reviewers are not deleted when you delete your activity and are retained for up to three years.
On training, the hub says Google uses your activity to provide, develop and improve its services, including training generative AI models, while Keep Activity is on. It says future chats won't be used to train its AI models if Keep Activity is off, unless you send feedback.
Claude (Anthropic)
These steps are from Anthropic's help center article on deleting or renaming a conversation, which covers its consumer products. It says commercial products are covered separately.
- Delete one chat (web): find the chat in the left sidebar or click Chats and tasks, hover over it, click the three-dot button, choose Delete and confirm.
- Delete several or all chats (web): click Chats and tasks, hover over a chat, click the three-dot button and choose Select. Tick more chats, or click Select all at the top, then click Delete and confirm.
- iPhone: in the chat list, touch and hold a conversation, tap Delete and confirm. In an open chat, the page describes the three-dot button at the top right.
- Android: in an open chat, tap the three-dot button at the top right, then Delete and confirm. For several chats, open the chat list, tap the checklist icon at the top right, tick chats, tap the trash icon and confirm with Delete.
- Delete the account (web): click your initials or name in the lower left, choose Settings (or Settings, then Account) and click Delete account. iPhone: Settings, the Account section, Profile, Delete account, then Delete. Android: the menu at the upper left, your initials at the lower left, Profile, Account Actions, Delete Account, then "I Understand".
- Before deleting: Anthropic's page says that on paid Pro, Max or Ultra plans you cancel in Billing settings and wait for the billing period to end before deleting. It says some accounts must contact support, that deletion is permanent, and that you can export your data first on web or desktop.
Claude: retention and training
Anthropic's help center says deleted chats are removed from your history immediately and deleted from its back-end systems within 30 days, and that projects and account information stay until you delete them or the account. It says to delete all your data you delete the account. Anthropic's privacy center says inputs and outputs flagged for Usage Policy violations may be kept for up to 2 years, and trust and safety classification scores for up to 7 years. The pages do not say how long data is kept after an account is deleted.
On training, Anthropic's page says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude if you choose to allow it, through the Model Improvement setting in Privacy Settings. We did not find the default stated on the page. It says Incognito chats are not used for training, and that conversations flagged for safety review may still be used to improve safety detection. It also says that if you allow training, de-identified data may be kept for up to 5 years.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft's help pages say an updated Copilot app for web, desktop and mobile has been available since August 18, 2026, and some older articles say they apply only to the older version. These steps are from the pages Microsoft marks as current for personal Microsoft accounts; work or school accounts are covered by different articles.
- Delete one chat: sign in to Copilot with your Microsoft account, select the conversation in the Chats list, choose More, then Delete. Older version only: an older Microsoft article describes right-clicking the conversation in the Windows or macOS app, or the three dots in the mobile app.
- Delete all chats: Microsoft's US help article says that when you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account, you can use the privacy dashboard. Go to Privacy, then Empower your productivity, then Copilot, then Your Copilot app activity history, then Copilot apps. You can select Export all activity history or Delete all activity history, and confirm with Clear. Older version only: an older article adds that on an Apple ID sign-in, you can go to Account, Privacy, then Clear my history in the app.
- Delete the account: Copilot uses your Microsoft account. Microsoft's page on closing a Microsoft account says to sign in, review and tick the acknowledgments, choose a reopen window of 30 or 60 days, pick a reason and select Mark account for closure. It says that if you reset all sign-in verification details you must wait 60 days before closing, and that Microsoft deletes your data and content after the reopen window passes.
Microsoft Copilot: retention and training
As of November 5, 2026, we found no retention period on Microsoft's current pages for the updated app. Older version only: Microsoft's privacy FAQ for the older version says it stores conversation activity for 18 months by default and that you can delete conversations at any time.
On training, Microsoft's activity history page, which covers the Microsoft Copilot app, says prompts, responses and file contents aren't used to train foundation models, and that feedback isn't used to train them either. Older version only: the older privacy FAQ says Microsoft uses conversation data for AI training except for certain excluded users or users who opted out, so the pages differ by app version.
Grok (xAI, now SpaceX Super Intelligence LLC)
As of November 5, 2026, the consumer FAQ at x.ai/legal/faq shows a page date of May 12, 2025, and its footer and page title name the company SpaceX Super Intelligence LLC (SpaceXSI), which our earlier sources called xAI. Menu names may have changed since the page date. We list only the menu paths we confirmed on the page. If you use Grok inside X, X's help center describes separate steps that we did not re-check.
- Delete all chats (mobile): Settings, then Data Controls, then Delete All Conversations.
- Training setting (mobile): Settings, then Data Controls, then the Improve the model toggle. On grok.com: Settings, then Data, then Improve the Model.
- Private Chat: the FAQ says Private Chat history isn't viewable and is deleted from its systems within 30 days.
Grok: retention and training
The FAQ says the Improve the model setting controls whether your content is used for model training, and that Private Chat history is deleted from its systems within 30 days. We did not re-confirm the page's other retention statements, including exceptions, on November 5, 2026, so we do not repeat them here.
Perplexity
Perplexity's help center, which moved to www.perplexity.ai/help-center, calls chats sessions. Its account deletion article, last modified October 21, 2026, describes deleting from account settings without contacting support.
- Delete all sessions without deleting the account: go to perplexity.ai/library, click the three dots next to the threads tab, select Delete sessions and confirm. The page says this can't be undone.
- Delete a project, Page or single thread: open it, click the three dots next to the title, select Delete and confirm. The page says this can't be undone.
- Delete the account: sign in and go to perplexity.ai/account/details, or click the bottom-left corner and select All settings. Scroll to Delete account, click Learn more and confirm in the pop-up.
- What happens: Perplexity's page says profile details, preferences and settings are removed, and that search history, sessions and shared content are deleted. It says the account and personal data are permanently deleted within 30 days.
- Changing your mind: the page says signing back in before deletion completes cancels the request and reactivates the account. Once complete, deletion can't be reversed, and signing in again with the same method creates a new, empty account.
- Uploaded files: the page says files are kept for 30 days by default, and that to delete files, images or material uploaded in a session you delete the entire session.
- GDPR requests: the page says Perplexity processes right-to-deletion requests under the GDPR only as full account deletion, not for individual threads or date ranges.
Perplexity: retention and training
Perplexity's data collection article, last modified August 30, 2026, says the AI Data Retention setting is on by default for Free, Pro and Max users, and that these users can control whether their data is used for AI model training on the Preferences page. It says Enterprise data is never used for training, and that previously collected training data cannot be deleted or removed.
