Does Character.AI allow NSFW? Its filter and content rules

Character.AI's help center says pornographic content is against its terms of service, and the pages we reviewed describe no adult or 18+ content mode. This guide sets out, as of November 5, 2026, what the company's own pages say about its filter, moderation, reporting and under-18 changes, and whether we found any announcement about removing the filter.

Updated November 5, 2026. Facts checked against the cited sources on November 5, 2026.

The short answer

As of November 5, 2026, Character.AI's help center article "What about NSFW?" says that NSFW (not safe for work) content is a large umbrella and that pornographic content is against the company's terms of service. The article does not say that any group of users, including adults, can turn that rule off, and it does not mention a content filter.

We found no page on Character.AI's site, help center, Safety Center or official blog that describes an adult or 18+ content mode, a toggle for sexual content, or a different set of content rules for verified adults. That is a statement about what we found on its pages, not a claim about what the product does in every case. Its community guidelines prohibit attempts to bypass its safety systems. This guide gives no explicit detail and does not cover ways around any rule or age check.

What its pages say about sexual content

The "What about NSFW?" article is the most direct statement we found. It says the company sees NSFW as a broad category and says pornographic content is against its terms of service. It adds that the company is working on supporting a wider range of characters, and gives the example of villain characters that are not always calm and polite. The page shows no date.

As of November 5, 2026, Character.AI's community guidelines, in a section on sexual content standards, say illegal sexual content, child exploitation or abuse imagery, grooming, sexual extortion, pornographic content and nudity are prohibited. The guidelines also prohibit attempts to manipulate the system or bypass its security and safety systems. The page shows no date.

Character.AI's October 22, 2024 Community Safety Updates post describes policies that prohibit non-consensual sexual content and graphic or specific descriptions of sexual acts, and says the language model behind characters is continually trained to follow them. Our guide to whether Character.AI is safe notes that its community guidelines also prohibit pornographic content.

The pages we reviewed give one set of rules for all users and do not describe a separate rulebook for users who are 18 or older.

Is there an 18+ or adult mode?

As of November 5, 2026, the pages we reviewed describe none. What they describe is an age check. Character.AI's What is Age Assurance page says all users must complete an age assurance check, that users 18 or older keep full chat access, and that users under 18 go to an under-18 experience with a reading mode. The page says completing age assurance does not automatically grant 18+ access; the outcome depends on the age information provided.

The "18+ experience" in those pages refers to chat access for adults, not to a separate category of sexual content. Our guide to Character.AI age verification explains how the check works, including the selfie and ID steps handled by Persona.

What the filter and moderation do, per its pages

Character.AI's pages describe several layers. They are the company's descriptions, and we have not tested them.

  • Community guidelines: they say the company's systems filter illegal or harmful content through automated moderation and human review, and that its AI models are designed with filters and limits meant to prevent inappropriate outputs.
  • Platform-level filtering: a help center article on writing character definitions says content filtering happens at the platform level, that certain language, topics or scenarios may be filtered however a character is written, and that filters do not always explain why something was blocked. It says users who think something was flagged by mistake can contact support.
  • Model training and classifiers: its December 12, 2024 teen safety post says it uses classifiers to find specific content types in model responses and enforce policies that filter out sensitive content, and that user inputs that violate its Terms of Service or Community Guidelines are blocked from the conversation.
  • Automated tools and staff: its content moderation page says proprietary tools seek to block certain violating content before it is posted, and that a Trust & Safety team of internal staff, contracted moderators and vendors takes action on reported content.
  • Character moderation: its October 2024 post says it uses industry-standard and custom blocklists that are regularly updated, plus proactive review and user reports, and that users lose access to their chat history with characters removed as violative.
  • Restricted Access label: in an August 22, 2025 post, the company said characters that do not meet its Community Guidelines get a Restricted Access label, and other users cannot chat with them.
  • Reporting: its reporting page says users can report a character or a user they believe violates the Terms of Service, using the flag option on the chat page or the report button on a profile. The page does not say what happens after a report.

Did Character.AI remove or loosen the filter?

We found no statement on Character.AI's pages announcing that the filter was removed or turned off, or that it was being changed for adults. We do not report rumors.

What its pages do say is narrower. In an August 22, 2025 post, the company said it had adjusted its filter to recognize different types of roleplay in adventure better, so it would not unnecessarily filter fiction, and that users should experience filters far less often. The character-definition help article says filters are continuously adjusted toward being less restrictive where possible while maintaining safety. Neither page says that any category of content is newly allowed.

Several of its help center pages show no date, so a page may have been updated without a visible date. Our guide to whether Character.AI is shutting down covers its October 12, 2026 Chapter 11 announcement.

What changed for users under 18

Character.AI's Safety Center page says users under 18 get a separate model built to lower the chance of sensitive or suggestive output, using more conservative classifiers than the adult model, and a narrower set of searchable characters with filters that remove those tied to sensitive or mature topics. Its December 12, 2024 post said teen limits would be more conservative, particularly for romantic content.

In its October 29, 2025 announcement, the company said it would end open-ended chat for users under 18, and its November 21, 2025 update said removal would begin November 24, 2025 for U.S. users, with other markets to follow. Its help center says users verified as under 18 are placed in reading mode, where chat features are not available. See our guide to Character.AI age verification for the dates and the details of what under-18 users keep.

What happens if someone breaks the rules

As of November 5, 2026, Character.AI's Terms of Service, last updated August 27, 2025, include a content moderation section. It says the company may investigate and act against anyone it concludes violated the rules, using automated and manual measures. The pages we reviewed also describe the consequences below. This guide does not cover other parts of the terms.

  • Account and content actions: the terms say action may include restricting the visibility of content, suspending or removing content, suspending or terminating the account, and reporting to law enforcement.
  • Blocks: the terms say users blocked from the services agree not to circumvent the block.
  • Blocked messages: inputs that violate the Terms of Service or Community Guidelines are blocked from the conversation, per its December 2024 post.
  • Removed or restricted characters: violating characters can be blocklisted, removed or labeled Restricted Access, per its 2024 and 2025 posts.
  • Suspension for teens: its Safety Center page says teens are suspended if they repeatedly submit prompts that violate content policies.
  • The community standards help page says moderators have discretion to act as they see fit.

Laws that bear on sexual content and minors

No law names Character.AI, and whether a law covers a particular service is a legal question. These are rules and actions that touch on minors, age assurance or companion chatbots:

  • California SB 243, in effect since January 1, 2026: for users an operator knows are minors, it requires reasonable measures against sexually explicit material. SB 1119 deletes those known-minor duties on January 1, 2027.
  • California SB 1119, signed September 10, 2026: from January 1, 2027, companion chatbot operators must either determine each user's age or apply child protections to all users.
  • New York's AI companion law, in effect since November 5, 2025: it covers crisis protocols and human-disclosure notices and has no age-check requirement.
  • 44 state attorneys general wrote to 13 AI companies, including Character Technologies, about sexualized interactions with children on August 25, 2025. It was a letter, not a lawsuit.
  • The FTC's September 11, 2025 orders to seven companies, including Character Technologies, ask among other things how they limit use by minors. It is a study, not an enforcement case.
  • Kentucky's attorney general sued Character Technologies on January 8, 2026, alleging among other things a lack of age verification. These are allegations, not findings.

We are not saying Character.AI is covered by, or out of compliance with, any of these laws. It may have practices it has not published, and whether a law applies to it is a legal question this guide does not decide.

Questions

Will Character.AI allow NSFW?

As of November 5, 2026, its help center and community guidelines say pornographic content is against its rules, and the pages we reviewed describe no adult or 18+ content mode. We found no announcement that this is changing.

Can you be NSFW on Character.AI?

Character.AI's community guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity, and its October 2024 post describes policies against non-consensual sexual content and graphic descriptions of sexual acts. Its pages describe filtering and moderation, not a setting that allows such content. Its guidelines also prohibit attempts to bypass its safety systems.

Does Character.AI still have a filter?

Yes, according to its pages. Its community guidelines describe automated moderation and human review, plus filters and limits built into its models, and a help center article says content filtering happens at the platform level. The company has also said it adjusted its filter in August 2025 so it would not unnecessarily filter fiction.

Did Character.AI remove the filter?

We found no statement on its pages saying the filter was removed. The pages describe adjusting it to trigger less often on fiction and roleplay while keeping safety, which is different from removing it.

Is there a Character.AI 18+ mode?

The pages we reviewed describe none. They describe an age check after which users 18 or older keep full chat access and users under 18 are placed in reading mode without chat. The age assurance page says completing the check does not automatically grant 18+ access.

What happens if you break Character.AI's rules?

Its terms of service, last updated August 27, 2025, say action may include restricting the visibility of content, suspending or removing content, suspending or terminating the account, and reporting to law enforcement. Its other pages say violating inputs are blocked and violating characters can be removed or labeled Restricted Access.

Can under-18 users chat with characters?

Not in open-ended chat. Character.AI began removing open-ended chat for U.S. users under 18 on November 24, 2025, and its help center says users verified as under 18 are placed in reading mode, where chat features are not available.
